One day is enough to understand why nothing else looks like the High Atlas. Three valleys, three altitudes, three moods — and barely an hour of driving between each.
You start with the Ourika, the greenest of the three: its river lined with poplars, its terraced fields and its red-earth villages clinging to the slope. Stop at a Berber herbalist and at an argan oil cooperative run by women from the valley.
The road then climbs to Oukaimeden, at 2,600 metres. The landscape changes completely: open plateaus, grazing herds, sharp air and a view reaching all the way to Mount Toubkal. You will also find rock carvings several thousand years old.
Finally you drop down to Asni and its valley of fruit trees, known for its Saturday market. Lunch on a terrace facing the peaks, then an easy drive back to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
